Recent learnings

I learned…

…that my dad’s friend has a stage 3 lymphoma when it was not so long ago when we also visited another friend, who’s mom has breast cancer. Since when did cancer become a common disease?!
…the reason why I’m having a hard time coping–adjusting. And I am happy to end it.
…that it’s not all about position and money. It’s about being happy–maintaining the balance, respect for one’s self, and sanity…

…that watching Inception would lead me to drool over Leonardo Dicaprio but only during his Romeo+Juliet days.

…that some reviews are overrated. M. Night’s The Last Airbender wasn’t so bad after all. Perhaps for those who haven’t seen the cartoon series would not appreciate it but it wasn’t really bad compared to Lady in the Water.

…that a python snake has ribs

…that there’s a fish which has a set of human-like teeth [Pacu fish]

…how frustrating it is to eat a possibly day-old viand from the mall foodcourt.
…that Dominic Ochoa’s Thumbs Up mini ice cream can really be tasty & fun to eat. Love the dark chocolate & avocado flavors. Though a fad, it’s good to know that small businesses like this could thrive in this challenging economy.

…that worrying about the next thing to do or place to go could be fun at times. Doing things unplanned can be sometimes very exciting…

Up in the Air (2010)

photo from IMP Awards

RATING: 3/5

CATEGORY: Drama

There’s nothing much to brag about George Clooney‘s film Up in the Air but I liked it since I could relate. I wasn’t fired but I had my own share of firing people. As an HR practitioner and as a line manager, perhaps firing people is one of the hardest tasks to carry out plainly because I’m not good at delivering bad news nor in dealing with emotional people.

Perhaps this is the only film I’ve seen that talks about current events in relation to the 2009 global financial crisis. This crisis is still evident as few companies are still retrenching and many are still unemployed. It’s just frustrating as I receive tons of calls and emails of applications everyday and yet I have few to offer.

Having played the role of Jessica in the Twilight Saga would probably stereotype Anna Kendrick for playing support roles and annoying girly girl characters. She is lucky enough to bag this role and showcase her acting skills.

As usual, George Clooney still looks charming.

In it’s entirety, I enjoyed some of the witty dialogues…especially the parenthesis thing…

Ryan Bingham: [on getting through airport security] Never get behind old people. Their bodies are littered with hidden metal and they never seem to appreciate how little time they have left. Bingo, Asians. They pack light, travel efficiently, and they have a thing for slip on shoes. Gotta love ‘em.
Natalie Keener: That’s racist.
Ryan Bingham: I’m like my mother, I stereotype. It’s faster.

Ryan Bingham: [End of closing monologue] The stars will wheel forth from their daytime hiding places; and one of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over.

Ryan Bingham: I thought I was a part of your life.
Alex Goran: I thought we signed up for the same thing… I thought our relationship was perfectly clear. You are an escape. You’re a break from our normal lives. You’re a parenthesis.
Ryan Bingham: I’m a parenthesis?

Natalie Keener: Please, for the love of God, can I fire the next one.

separated @ birth: Jackie Chan + Dolphy

separated @ birth: Jackie Chan + Dolphy

I was at SM Megamall yesterday when I saw Jackie Chan‘s new movie poster (Little Big Soldier). Similarly looking, Jackie Chan could pass as one of Dolphy‘s numerous sons. :-D

Impeded Monologue

On my way to work, I’d often pass by 7-11 to grab a drink. There is this old lady in shabby clothes who appears to be insane and would always stare at me as I take a swig of Mine Shine. Intrigued, I would often ask myself, “What is she thinking?”…”Does she know she’s crazy?”. With her every stare, I would attempt to stare back for a few minutes…trying to read her mind… As much as I want to approach her and get some answers, I’m just too scared…too scared to be mistaken for another young lady in business attire.

Finally, I was able to watch the 1981 Clash of the Titans. As much as I want to appreciate the plot which is somewhat different from that of the 2010 remake, I can’t help but laugh as early as the open credits. Of course, there’s nothing much to expect from the 1980s special effects when there’s a phony bird (eagle?) flying through the mountains where you can almost imagine a man holding an eagle cardboard attached to a stick. Not to mention, the Kraken resembled one of Shaider’s rivals as I imagine Puma Lay Ar shouting, “Release the Kraken!”.

If I wasn’t excited to see Robert Downey, Jr. again and curious about Scarlett Johansson‘s role, I would have dozed off while watching Iron Man 2. The film was too long and lacks focus in its attempt to introduce the characters while showcasing the ‘somehow’ star-studded cast.

At some point, most ‘ordinary’ people would want to see themselves in TV or their names in print. Others…like budding writers, would want to see their writings published…having to see their names with a byline. I don’t consider myself to be striking nor good in writing. I’m not a celebrity nor a writer material. In short, I consider myself as ordinary…but…I have:

  • Appeared in three TV commercials locally and abroad when I was still a kid up to my early teens
  • Interviewed for a feature article in a business newspaper insert
  • Written three blogs for my company’s global intranet site
  • Written  a feature article for a global charity newsletter
  • Asked to contribute a themed article on innovation for my company’s global newsletter

Most of which have my face and name on it. :-D

Looking back, I just realized…I have accomplished all of which without even extending an effort nor asking for it. They may be simple for some people but these are truly among my personal achievements.

My heart is filled with so much hatred and disappointment. I can only think of forgiving these people as an option to ease my pain. As I move on, I wonder…should I leave a farewell message? Do they deserve it? As I ponder, probably I should. My conduct and high regard for ethics urge me to do so but I’ll leave a message as simple (somewhat generic) and fitting for those a few. Admittedly blunt, I may have a hard time drafting this so I should probably start…That is right after I play another round of game where the funny zombies and mutated plants await. :-D
